BOTRYOIDAL comes from the Ancient Greek word βότρυς (bótrus) which translates to a “bunch of grapes”. This type of mineral formation is common for certain materials like malachite and grape agate but rare to see in other materials such as rhodochrosite. ✨
Minerals have a botryoidal growth pattern when they grow in an environment with many particles that cause the crystal nucleation. This would include specks of sand or dust amongst other that the mineral then forms around the particle causing the spherical formation!
